Jets Sign Former Lions' Undrafted 'Hard Knocks' Notable
The New York Jets have added a healthy body to their stable of offensive linemen on Wednesday.
The team announced the signing of Obinna Eze to the Practice Squad. The move comes less than one week after the Jets placed utility man Wes Schweitzer on Injured Reserve for the second time this season. Meanwhile, rookie right tackle Carter Warren is battling a hip injury.
Eze, a second-year pro, has yet to appear in an NFL regular season game. After four seasons at Memphis, Eze finished his collegiate career at Texas Christian. The 6-foot-8 bookend initially entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Lions in 2022.
His underdog fight for a roster spot was chronicled by HBO's Hard Knocks documentary series, which featured the Lions that summer. Eze did not survive roster cutdown day but spent the 2022 campaign on Detroit's Practice Squad.
The Lions released Eze following training camp this past August. The 25-year-old spent three weeks on the Pittsburgh Steelers' Practice Squad in October.
One of four offensive linemen, Eze is the lone tackle on the Jets' Practice Squad. Chris Glaser, Xavier Newman and Rodger Saffold are all interior players. New York signed Jake Hanson off the P-Squad and onto the 53-man roster last week. Hanson earned a start at right guard against Houston on December 10.
The Jets (5-8) return to action against the Miami Dolphins (9-4) on December 17 at Hard Rock Stadium.
