Jets Send Schweitzer Back to Injured Reserve, Promote Former Packers' Center
The New York Jets have placed veteran interior offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer on Injured Reserve while signing his replacement off the Practice Squad.
The Jets promoted center Jake Hanson, adding the former Green Bay Packers' sixth-round draft pick to the active 53-man roster. After inking a P-Squad deal with New York on November 6, Hanson expended the three allotted gameday elevations per player. He was active during Weeks 11, 12 and 13. In last Sunday's 13-8 loss to the Falcons, Hanson's action consisted of two special teams snaps.
The Jets announced the two roster moves on Saturday, one day prior to a Week 14 home game against the Houston Texans.
Schweitzer, who started at right guard last week against Atlanta, lands on IR for the second time this season due to a calf issue. The 30-year-old Swiss Army knife played all 68 offensive snaps on December 3, but was unavailable for practice this past week. In his first season with Gang Green, after signing a free-agent deal this past March, Schweitzer made six appearances with two starts.
The 26-year-old Hanson was waived by the Packers this past August. He made six appearances for Green Bay in 2022.
The Jets will be forced to start a 10th different offensive line combination in Week 14.
"The guys are working their tails off. There’s a lot of guys who are taking the field who just got here, and learning a scheme, and grinding to try to put their best foot forward," said head coach Robert Saleh on Friday.
Depending on rookie right tackle Carter Warren's availability, Max Mitchell, who has been a fill-in at guard this season, may have to play on the outside. Either Hanson or gameday elevation Chris Glaser could be needed to start at right guard.
