McGovern Makes His Way Home to Gang Green
Connor McGovern’s path through free agency led the veteran center back home to the New York Jets.
After testing the market, the 30-year old McGovern has re-signed with Gang Green.
The Jets officially announced the transaction on Monday morning, three days before the 2023 NFL Draft kicks off in Kansas City.
McGovern has been a mainstay in the middle of New York’s offensive line for the past three seasons. In 2022, the reliable starter was on the field for every offensive snap.
The former fifth-round draft pick (Denver Broncos), who was the lone Jet to participate in all 1,114 offensive plays last year, has made 48 of a possible 50 starts since joining Gang Green in 2020.
McGovern’s 3,055 offensive snaps lead all Jets’ players over the past three seasons. The seventh-year pro has missed only two games total in the last five seasons.
Prior to re-signing their three-year starter, Jets’ brass had verbally confirmed interest in veteran center Ben Jones, who was released by the Tennessee Titans in March, but talks apparently never materialized with the 34-year old.
Details of McGovern’s new contract have not been disclosed, but his price tag is likely significantly lower than what was initially thought to be his market value. Spotrac estimated McGovern’s average annual value at $12.5 million.
Gang Green had already made a handful of transactions along the offensive line, including the signing of veteran Swiss Army knife Wes Schweitzer. The Jets also added Trystan Colon from the Baltimore Ravens and re-upped reserve guard Adam Pankey, who was a restricted free agent.
Most recently, reserve tackle Cedric Ogbuehi signed a new deal with the Jets. He started five games after being claimed off the Houston Texans’ Practice Squad late last September.
