Broncos Kicker Brandon McManus Aims to Break Matt Prater's Record
Detroit Lions kicker Matt Prater holds the record for kicking the longest field goal in NFL history.
Back in 2013, Prater was a member of the Denver Broncos.
On Dec. 8, 2013, Prater successfully kicked a 64-yard field goal against the Tennessee Titans as time expired in the first half.
In Week 13 of the 2019 season, Broncos kicker Brandon McManus had an opportunity to attempt a 65-yard field goal against the Chargers.
McManus went on the field to attempt the record-breaking kick, but Denver head coach Vic Fangio called him off the field and much to McManus' dismay.
Appearing on NFL Network's morning show "Good Morning Football," McManus explained that Prater texted him wondering why he was not given the opportunity.
"I have a big leg, and I have always wanted my named etched in history. I know that I can make that. My teammates know I can make that," McManus said.
He added, "I was the one who kind of went out on the field initially, because hey, this is the opportunity of a lifetime. A chance to break Matt's (Prater) record. Even he texted me after the game, and said, 'I can't believe they didn't let you do it,' but I really would like the opportunity to do that."
Now, there is even more of an incentive for McManus to break the record.
He has partnered with Bud Light, and if he breaks the record in 2020, the entire city of Denver gets a free beer.
For Prater, he is entering the final season of his three-year contract that he signed with Detroit in 2017.
He is likely in line for an extension with Detroit, should he remain as productive as he has been for the organization.
