Is DeMarvion Overshown Lions Linebacker of Future?
The Detroit Lions attended the Pro Day workout of Texas Longhorns linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.
Linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard was on hand to meet with the 6-foot-4, 220-pound prospect who is expected to be selected in the third or fourth-round of this year's draft.
Overshown also met with Detroit during the Senior Bowl and informally at the scouting combine, likely indicating a certain level of interest from Detroit's front office and coaching staff.
According to NFL Draft Bible, Overshown possesses a "lengthy frame with an athletic build but sturdy base. Frequently plays as the overhang when faced with 3x1 sets. Some edge alignment where he can run the hoop en route to the quarterback. Range as a zone dropper, length makes the hook-curl area off-limits for quarterbacks. Can flow to the boundary and set an edge as a sideline-to-sideline player. Aggressive tackler, velocity, and explosion upon contact but typically controlled."
A film review indicates a player whose length makes him unique for an inside linebacker. His relentless energy and high motor jumps off the screen and certainly would have caught the attention of head coach Dan Campbell and the majority of the defensive coaching staff.
At times, Overshown did not take the best angles in coverage and open-field tackling appeared inconsistent.
Sheppard and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn would need to immediately coach up his read and reaction times, as he appeared at times to be stuck in the mud.
What will impress is his natural versatility and ability to lineup at different positions.
Working in Detroit's defensive scheme should allow for his pass coverage skills to develop and become a real asset, if the opportunity presents itself for Overshown to join the roster.
Overshown elected to return to Texas for a fifth season due to feeling he left far too much on the field during the previous two seasons.
By returning, the talented linebacker certainly improved his stock following a productive senior season that resulted in first-team All-Big 12 honors and career highs in several statistical categories.
"I was able to show more versatility," Overshown said at the combine. "Get bigger, get more comfortable playing the linebacker position. It really helped my stock and helped my team."
Last season, Overshown secured 95 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and four sacks.
