Fact or Fiction: Is Derrick Henry Final Piece of Lions' Puzzle?

Could the Lions make a big trade at the deadline?
In this story:

The Detroit Lions are off to a historic start with a 5-1 record early in the 2023 season. Their strengths have been on full display, while their performances leave weaknesses to be determined.

One area where the team has struggled, though, is with injuries. Several key players have missed multiple games. That won't change Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, with starting running back David Montgomery and offensive lineman Jonah Jackson already ruled out.

Dan Campbell said early in the week that Montgomery may miss an extended amount of time with a rib injury. As a result, Jahmyr Gibbs is expected to play a key role in his return after missing two game with an injury of his own.

With all the difficulties in the Lions' backfield from a health standpoint, it's worth pondering whether they could use another player from an outside source. With the trade deadline approaching, players like Derrick Henry and others could be in play.

Henry is a particularly interesting option. He's under contract until the end of the season, so any team acquiring him would be taking on a rental.

His career history speaks for itself, with four seasons of at least 1,000 yards and another coming up just short with 937. In his eight seasons, he has amassed over 8,000 rushing yards and 81 rushing scores.

Given how the market value for running backs has dropped, the Lions may not have to pay a premium to add one. With Tennessee sitting at 2-4, they could be in the market to make a move.

The talented and physical back would fit Detroit's offensive scheme perfectly, as he has the ability to shoulder a heavy workload while seemingly getting stronger as the game goes on.

However, trading for Henry would give the Lions three significant running back commitments in this season alone. Brad Holmes has placed a high value on his draft capital, so to part with a high pick for a running back after already adding two this offseason would be an interesting decision.

A player like Henry would certainly make the Lions better, but they've seen enough from David Montgomery to know that he is capable of having similar production. Despite missing a game this season, Montgomery has tallied 385 rushing yards on 95 carries to this point in the season.

There's also the standing of Gibbs to consider. The rookie is very talented but has yet to break through and make a solid impact. That time could come Sunday, as the team will lean on him in Montgomery's absence.

With those two commitments and the presence of Craig Reynolds as the team's third option, the prospect of adding another star-caliber running back is difficult to fathom.

As a result, it's easy to see the Lions staying put with what they have and allocating trade assets elsewhere.
