Jameson Williams: 'It Can Get Better For Sure'

Will Jameson Williams continue to improve?

Jameson Williams has produced a mixed bag of results in his first three games with the Detroit Lions during the 2023 campaign.

In his second game of the year -- a win over Tampa Bay -- the second-year wideout provided an electrifying touchdown catch to propel the offense. Just one weekend later, though, he was held without a catch, on six targets, against the Ravens.

Among those targets were two fourth-quarter drops, including one off his helmet and another in the end zone.

"I was just more focused on the team, how we played," Williams said. "My performance, it can get better for sure. Gotta get better."

The offense struggled to get in a rhythm throughout the contest, as it went three-and-out on each of its first three drives. Williams believes that the showing isn't indicative of the team's true identity.

"Yeah, actually. First few drives, we went three-and-out. So, the rhythm with that, felt like we could've got going a little faster," Williams explained. "If we would've got going on one of those drives, I feel like the game could've had a different outcome. I just feel like, offense, we've got to get going for sure in the first few drives."

Williams stated that he was unsure whether more targets for him could help the offense get into better rhythm.

"I'm not sure," he said. "I don't call the plays."

For a player who has been as heavily scrutinized as the talented Alabama product has, it's been a whirlwind start. However, those inside the locker room maintain their confidence in the young wide receiver.

"Just keep working. Again, it's so early in his career and his development. Just keep working with him, building that trust with him and getting on the same page," said quarterback Jared Goff. "He's working his tail off at practice, and has done a great job trying to get better every week. Expect to see his development continue."

Williams possesses undeniable, game-breaking speed. However, consistency has been a struggle. Through his three 2023 appearances, he's earned a Pro Football Focus offensive grade of just 44.6.

Additionally, he has four drops already on 12 total targets. He's tallied four catches for 55 yards and a score to this point in the season.

"I just feel like we've got to get better as a team. That was unacceptable the way we came out to play. We lost by 20-plus," Williams stated. "We're going into that game, that's a good team. I know people might have the wrong mindset on us, but who cares. We're just looking forward to going out Monday Night, getting a good win. Just stacking."

Goff and Williams have been working together plenty since the receiver was reinstated from suspension. Their rapport has continued to build, and the veteran passer has remained optimistic about Williams' ability to be a major impact player.

The second-year wideout has maintained focus on team success even throughout his struggles. Despite the ups and downs, Williams has been steadfast about contributing to a winner.

Though he was ineffective against the Ravens in Week 7, he has turned the page to focusing on helping the team secure a win over Las Vegas Monday night.

"I don't think it's about (personal success)," Williams said. "I think it's about, just, the team just going out and playing good football and getting wins."
