Jameson Williams 'Never Been Shy' Hitting Defender
The Detroit Lions want to establish themselves as a physical football team that is able to win a variety of different ways.
While second-year wideout Jameson Williams has not been a focus of the offense, he has still contributed in areas that have caught the attention of the coaching staff.
Against the Los Angeles Chargers, the speedy wideout sprinted alongside veteran running back David Montgomery as he broke loose against the Chargers' defense.
Williams' block contributed to the returning Montgomery finding his way into the end zone on an explosive play that gave Detroit momentum.
Head coach Dan Campbell expressed to reporters the performance offensively was the best he had seen this season. The numerous explosive plays allowed Detroit to keep pace with the Chargers' offense since the defense struggled in the second half to record any stops.
Campbell noted, "I believe that’s the standard in the room, though. All of those guys are that way. I can tell you, all three of them between (Amon-Ra St. Brown, Kalif Raymond and Josh Reynolds) is where it all starts. Jamo, he’s part of it."
During the evaluation process, Detroit's coaching staff noticed that the speedy wideout was not unwilling to block.
Williams himself has expressed that if he does not showcase proper blocking techniques, Ben Johnson will not increase the amount of targets that come his way during games.
"Look, he’s never been shy about hitting somebody in run game, you saw that in college. So I think that’s the standard here," Campbell said. "I say it all the time — you want to be known as a physical team, your receivers have to block in the run game and your corners have to tackle on defense. And we do that here.
"So I think it’s a rite of passage and they showed up, they showed up big. We talked about not only making your plays in the pass game, executing, being productive, but we wanted physical dominance from the perimeter. And I think all those receivers showed up.”
