'He Knows': Jared Goff Remaining Aggressive, Despite Interceptions

Jared Goff not going into a 'shell' after tossing more interceptions

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff had a nice streak going of avoiding tossing interceptions.

Unfortunately, after completing 384 consecutive passes without an interception, the veteran signal-caller was picked in Week 2 by Seattle Seahawks cornerback Tre Brown, who subsequently returned it 40 yards for a touchdown.

Despite throwing a pick the last three games, Goff has responded well, and has not gone "into a shell," according to Lions head coach Dan Campbell.

His performance through four weeks, as a whole, has been solid. He ranks eighth in total QBR (67.6) and also in cumulative EPA, a metric used to determine points added by the quarterback's performance.

Goff also ranks third in Pro Football Focus' passing grade, at 81.0, amongst passers with a minimum of 100 drop-backs.

Another aspect that gives the team confidence is the improved ability to overcome mistakes.

Detroit's defense has withstood errors the past couple of weeks, limiting the opposition from scoring touchdowns.

“Nobody wants those, but I don’t feel like he’s pressing," Campbell said of Goff. "He’ll tell you he made an error, made a mistake. He’s falling away in the pocket, and makes an ill-advised throw as his eyes are on the receiver. Best part about it is he didn’t get frazzled. He went right back to work, and he didn’t let it. We were fortunate it didn’t hurt us, because our defense went right out and put the fire out. And, that’s what you’ve got to be able to do is overcome those errors."

Detroit's coaching staff does not want the recent uptick in errors to cause Goff to shy away from making his reads and pulling the trigger on his passes.

"I don’t feel any panic, and he knows. He came up to me right after the game, and he was like, he knows," Campbell said. "He doesn’t want it to happen, but what I want more than anything is, I don’t want him to go into a shell or start panicking. And, he’s not, and I love that. It’s something that he’s thinking about, we’ll be on top of also. The ability to overcome those because some of those will happen, it helps you win, certainly."
