Lions Fans Debate if QB Trey Lance Is Best Backup Option

Should the Lions give up a third-round draft pick for Trey Lance?

Detroit Lions supporters understand one of the current areas of need is the backup quarterback position.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes made it crystal clear, and acknowledged that the team did not do a good enough job last offseason of addressing the backup position, leaving the front office scrambling to acquire Nate Sudfeld after moving on from both David Blough and Tim Boyle.

Following the conclusion of the 2022 season, Holmes expressed that the team would emphasize the backup position, and reportedly it has a "strong" contract offer on the table to veteran Teddy Bridgewater.

While the veteran weighs his options and looks around the league for teams that could use a starter, Detroit has potentially another option, beside for targeting a quarterback in this year's draft.

It was reported by NFL Network this week that the San Francisco 49ers have been fielding calls from teams, seeking to gain information about trading for Trey Lance.

NFL reporter Ian Rapoport explained on Twitter, "The #49ers have received inquiries from several teams looking into a potential trade for former No. 3 pick QB Trey Lance. The conversations have been the result of SF fielding the calls, not making them, with teams aware that Brock Purdy is likely the future starter."

Supporters of the Lions took to social media to debate the team giving up draft capital to add a young, unproven signal-caller to the current roster.

One supporter expressed, "Not a terrible idea. Especially if Ben Johnson and #MCDC like him and see some potential. He’s a 'prospect' just like all the other QBs coming out in next week's draft."

Another indicated that "he will get injured on the bench."

Here is a sample of the reaction online to NFL Network's report that teams have been calling the 49ers seeking information about Lance's availability.
