Lions Listed as NFL Team Which Should Go 'All In' for Lamar Jackson
The Detroit Lions had one of their best statistical seasons offensively with quarterback Jared Goff under center.
Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is returning in 2023, and the offense is looking to pick up right where it left off in 2022.
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was not able to secure a long-term contract extension with the team that made him a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, opening the door for other teams to negotiate with the 26-year-old quarterback.
The Sporting News recently compiled a list of landing-spot tiers for the talented signal-caller.
Detroit was listed as one of the teams that should go "all in" for Jackson.
"Like the Texans, they have two first-rounders and ample cap space," writes Vinnie Iyer. "Unlike the Texans, they would be instead contenders to win their own conference with Jackson upgrading and adding an extra dimension to a loaded offense vs. Jared Goff, who would be an easy cut to free up around $21 million."
Detroit's front office and coaching staff are happy with Goff, but it is not too often a player with Jackson's skill set becomes available.
While Detroit will likely inquire about signing Jackson, the team could find advantages in targeting a young, college quarterback coming out in the draft.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes expressed at the combine, "We’re happy with Jared. He’s our starter, but we need to add some pieces in that room overall.”
