Detroit Lions Sign RB Devine Ozigbo, Waive WR Avery Davis

The Lions made a roster move prior to day 13 of training camp.

The Detroit Lions signed running back Devine Ozigbo and waived wide receiver Avery Davis, the team announced Wednesday.

Undrafted in 2019, Ozigbo has spent time with four NFL teams in his career. In 25 career games, the Nebraska product has totaled 27 rushing yards and 75 receiving yards.

He signed with New Orleans as an undrafted free agent in 2019. Both Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn were on staff with the Saints at the time.

Ozigbo was released at the conclusion of training camp and was claimed by Jacksonville.

He made his NFL debut with Jacksonville, playing for the Jaguars from 2019-21 before playing for New Orleans in the latter half of the 2021 season.

In 2022, he played four games for the Denver Broncos. He had three carries for four yards last season in Denver. He's also spent time with the New England Patriots in 2021, though he was never activated for a game.

The Lions currently have a competition for the third running back spot behind starters David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. Justin Jackson, who held the role for much of last season, is viewed as the favorite to win the spot.

Other candidates include Craig Reynolds, Jermar Jefferson and undrafted rookie Mohamed Ibrahim.

Ozigbo played collegiately at Nebraska, where he contributed in all four years of his career. Most notably, he rushed for 1,082 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior with the Cornhuskers.

In total, he rushed for 2,196 yards and 21 touchdowns at Nebraska. He takes the roster spot of Davis, a Notre Dame product who had signed with the Lions on Saturday.

The Lions are entering their second day of joint practices with the New York Giants. Their preseason opener is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Ford Field.
