Six Detroit Lions Do Not Practice Wednesday
The list was certainly long of Detroit Lions players not participating in practice.
Unfortunately, the injury bug has hit the Lions' roster early, similar to last season.
After a tough loss in the home opener, Dan Campbell's squad returned to the practice field in preparation for the 2-0 Atlanta Falcons, who are coming off a narrow 25-24 victory against the Green Bay Packers.
Those not practicing include David Montgomery, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Taylor Decker, Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Emmanuel Moseley and Kerby Joseph.
Hope for safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson
The Lions have some level of optimism regarding the torn pectoral injury suffered by veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
Campbell described the injury as being "clean," indicating the recovery process has a chance to be shorter than expected.
"I know the reports we've gotten back on it is it was a very clean injury, and that's normally good for surgery, recovery, all those things," said Campbell. "I certainly think there's a chance that we can get him back."
Open roster spots
With one open roster spot remaining on the 53-man roster, Detroit could turn to the practice squad to fill the open position.
Campbell has oftentimes voiced the confidence he has in the practice squad, as the familiarity being around the team makes the transition to the active roster slightly smoother.
“I think we’re hanging tight for now," Campbell told reporters. "We’re gonna hang tight, and then we’re talking about some of these guys we may elevate off the practice squad. A lot of that’s gonna depend on who’s available, who’s not. But all those guys, all and any that we have, there’s a reason why they’re here and there’s a reason why they would go to the game for us. We trust them.”
