100 Days of Mocks: Three-Rounder Starts With Elite Receiver

The Green Bay Packers went receiver, outside linebacker, tight end in this new three-round mock draft.
In this story:

GREEN BAY, Wis. – A first-round receiver for the Green Bay Packers? Hasn’t happened since 2002 but what better way to make another run with Aaron Rodgers or give Jordan Love a chance for instant success.

In a three-round mock draft for Pro Football Network, Kent Platte went with TCU star Quentin Johnston with the 15th overall pick.

(Platte, by the way, is the brains behind Relative Athletic Scores.)

“It seems almost unfair for the Green Bay Packers to land Quentin Johnston after they drafted Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, but the embarrassment of riches would allow the team to concentrate all of their efforts elsewhere for several years,” Platte wrote.

“Johnston is expected to test among the best height/weight/speed players at the Combine, similar to Watson last season. Putting both on the field at the same time would be nearly impossible to defend, as long as their quarterback is even somewhat competent.”

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, Johnston is a freak. In 2022, he caught 60 passes for 1,069 yards (17.8 average) and six touchdowns. While a lot of those numbers were put up against lousy Big 12 defenses, he destroyed Michigan in the College Football Playoffs with six receptions for 163 yards and one touchdown.

“Long, fast, explosive athlete who has really good hands,” one AFC exec told SI.com’s Albert Breer. “He’s physical to attack the ball and really tough after the catch.”

Johnston is the son of two military parents.

“The kid's an extremely hard worker and a great person to be around,” TCU quarterback and Heisman Trophy-runner-up Max Duggan said. “He wants to show up and grow to work. He wants to practice. He wants to do all the little stuff and the dirty stuff. He wants to lift weights.

“I think that's what makes him such a good player. Obviously, we know what he is talent-wise, but the type of person he is makes him special.”

The Packers took care of a big need in the second round by adding a tight end-turned-edge defender, then went back on offense with a tight end in the third round. Check out the mock for those selections.
