What You Need to Know About Packers vs. Vikings
Referee: Shawn Hochuli. The son of longtime referee Ed Hochuli, he became an NFL official in 2014 and a referee in 2018. The road team went 22-10 in his games in 2020 and 2021 but the home team went 12-5 last year. This year, the home team is 3-3. His crews, generally, have been a bit more flag-happy than most but are exactly at the league average this year, according to Pro Football Reference.
Betting line: The Packers opened as 1-point favorites a week ago but, based on last week’s results, the Vikings moved to 1.5-point favorites at FanDuel Sportsbook on Monday. The line was unchanged as of Sunday morning. The public is overwhelmingly on the Vikings to cover. The over/under dipped a point to 41.5. Only four games this week have a lower total. The Vikings have hit the over just once this year.
History lesson: The Packers lead the regular-season series 64-56-3, and the teams have split two playoff matchups. Green Bay is 25-19-3 at Lambeau Field, including 3-1 under coach Matt LaFleur. The last two home victories over Minnesota have come by a combined 51 points. Last season, the Packers trounced the Vikings 41-17, their blowout win over the NFC North champions keeping them in the playoff race for one more week.
Coaches: Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur is in his fifth season and has a career record of 49-23. He is 5-3 vs. the Vikings. Minnesota’s Kevin O’Connell is 16-8 in his second season. He is 1-1 against Green Bay.
In the rankings: Green Bay on offense ranks 17th in points per game (21.7), 22nd in passing per play (6.15) and 24th in rushing per play (3.76). Packers-Vikings High-Fives
One: Vikings QB Kirk Cousins is coming off a brilliant performance in an upset victory over the 49ers on Monday night. He was 35-of-45 passing for 378 yards and two touchdowns against one of the top defenses in the NFL. Cousins leads the NFL with four games of 300-plus yards this season and became the fifth quarterback in NFL history with 50 games of 300-plus yards in his first 12 seasons. Even with Justin Jefferson on injured reserve, he leads the NFL with 16 touchdown passes and is second with 2,057 passing yards.
Two: How have the Vikings gotten by without Jefferson? First-round pick Jordan Addison, who has the third-shortest odds for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year at FanDuel, has been an instant-impact player. Against the 49ers, he caught seven passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. He is second in the NFL with six touchdown receptions. That’s twice as many as any other rookie; the Packers’ Jayden Reed is one of three with three touchdowns.
Three: Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson caught 11 passes for 86 yards against the 49ers. He ranks second among tight ends with 47 receptions and 390 receiving yards this year. He’s caught at least six passes against Green Bay in three consecutive games. The Packers have allowed only 24 catches against tight ends, fifth-fewest in the league.
Four: Vikings DE Danielle Hunter leads the NFL with nine sacks and 12 tackles for losses. He has one sack in three of the last four against Green Bay. The Packers have struggled to protect quarterback Jordan Love at times but they’re fifth in sack percentage (5.15) and tied for third in sacks allowed (10).
Five: Here’s Cousins on facing a Packers team without a Hall of Famer at quarterback: “Yeah, it’s been like, what, 30 years? Thirty-five years? And who knows what Jordan [Love] will become. You just don’t know. He’s certainly got talent. He’s a first-round pick for a reason. You’re still playing potentially a very good quarterback.
“But it is something you’re used to No. 4 and No. 12, and now it’s No. 10. Being an offensive guy, you’re not really thinking too much about it but, at the same time, you understand the level of ball they’ve had at the quarterback position. And that to beat them, more often than not, you’re going to have to match it.”
