Add Two to Packers’ Pre-Training Camp Injury Report

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers added safety Tarvarius Moore and former safety Tariq Carpenter to their Non-Football Injury List on Tuesday, the day before the first practice of training camp.

Here is their injury report heading into Wednesday.

Physically Unable to Perform List: OLB Rashan Gary (knee), CB Eric Stokes (foot), WR Jeff Cotton (unknown).

NFI List: LB Tariq Carpenter, S Tarvarius Moore, TE Camren McDonald, WR Grant DuBose (all unknown).

A source said Moore’s injury is minor and shouldn’t hold him out for long. Good thing, because the Packers are young at safety after allowing Adrian Amos to sign with the Jets in free agency. Pre-emptively, they signed Moore after he started 14 games in his career with the San Francisco 49ers.

Darnell Savage will lead the group. He was brought back for 2023, partially because the team didn't have much of a choice after exercising his fully guaranteed fifth year option one year ago.

Who is going to start next to him is anyone's guess. Moore is among the candidates. After missing all of 2021 with a torn Achilles, he played 41 snaps on defense last year but was a key player on special teams.

Once healthy, he’ll likely join returning player Rudy Ford and another free-agent pickup, Jonathan Owens, in the race to start alongside Savage. If nothing else, he should be a core special-teamer.

As with all the players on the injury lists, Moore can be activated at any time and counts against the 90-man roster.

Joining him on NFI is one of the more interesting stories of camp.

Tariq Carpenter was drafted in the seventh round last year as a safety. While he didn’t play much on defense, by the end of the season he was one of the team's best players on special teams.

This offseason, the Packers moved him to linebacker.

“It’s definitely new,” he told Packer Central during OTAs. “I never played linebacker in my life. It’s like I’m learning freaking Portuguese. It’s a whole new language.”

The severity of the injury is not known. Any missed practice reps, obviously, will hinder him in learning a position he’d never played before.
