Packers’ Projected Win Total, Playoff Odds Tumble
GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers’ loss to the Las Vegas Raiders could prove costly. Given their youth on offense, the Packers have a limited margin for error and can’t afford to lose winnable games like the one in Vegas.
The impact of that game is evident in new sportsbook odds.
With Green Bay taking a 2-3 record into Sunday’s game at the Denver Broncos, the Packers’ over/under win total has returned to 7.5 at FanDuel Sportsbook, That’s where they were at the start of the season, but they moved to 8.5 after earning a comfortable win at the Chicago Bears in Week 1.
Following the trade of Aaron Rodgers and the ascension of Jordan Love at quarterback, the Packers opened the season at +165 to make the playoffs. After Week 1, that moved to -110. Now, Green Bay is +154 at FanDuel.
What does that mean? By implied probability, Green Bay’s playoff chances started at 37.7 percent, moved to 52.4 percent and are back to 39.4 percent.
With the Detroit Lions (5-1) the only team not below .500, the NFC North is a runaway in the standings and the sportsbooks.
At SI Sportsbook, Detroit is -500, Green Bay (2-3) is +550, Minnesota (2-4) is +1200 and Chicago (1-5) is +5000. At FanDuel, Detroit is -490, Green Bay is +850, Minnesota is +950 and Chicago is +8000.
The Packers are +7000 to win the Super Bowl at SI Sportsbook, +8000 at FanDuel and +8000 at BetMGM, and +10000 at SuperBoook. Those are incredibly long odds for a perennial championship contender, though Green Bay was +25000 after losing at Philadelphia last year.
San Francisco is the favorite to win this year’s Super Bowl.
Looking ahead, the Packers are consensus 1.5-point favorites for Sunday at Denver as well as for their Week 8 game at Lambeau Field against the Vikings.
For Green Bay to take advantage of a soft part of the schedule and claw its way into the playoffs, it’s going to be up to quarterback Jordan Love to find harmony with his young receiver corps. Perhaps more than that, the defense needs to play better. Joe Barry’s unit played well in Week 1 against Chicago, Week 3 against New Orleans and Week 5 at Las Vegas but was run over in Week 2 against Atlanta and Week 4 against Detroit.
“If you look at it, I think our play style, if I look at what I’m most proud of, how hard the guys have played,” Barry said. “The negative, obviously, the two games being the biggest where we gave up a ton of rushing yards. Those were probably the two biggest things, pro and negative.
“It’s early. Hopefully, we’ll continue to get some guys back that have been out, and we’ve got a ton of football left. I’m excited about that.”
