Rodgers Favored to be Jets’ Starting Quarterback
GREEN BAY, Wis. – The New York Jets have a highly regarded head coach, the likely NFL Rookies of the Year on offense and defense, and a new offensive coordinator.
Now, they just need a quarterback.
Could that quarterback be Green Bay Packers great Aaron Rodgers?
In odds offered by SportsBetting.ag, an offshore sportsbook, Rodgers is the favorite to be the Jets’ starting quarterback for Week 1.
Rodgers is +150, an implied probability of 40 percent. That’s not such an overwhelming favorite to make you think the sportsbook has some insight, but it is significantly ahead of Baltimore Ravens free agent Lamar Jackson (+400), on-the-trade-market Derek Carr of the Las Vegas Raiders (+450), San Francisco 49ers free agent Jimmy Garoppolo (+450), incumbent Jets backup Mike White (+600), former Jets starter Zach Wilson (+850) and potential first-round draft picks Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Will Levis (all +2500).
Jets coach Robert Saleh last week said “we do plan on bringing in a veteran quarterback if we can.” Rodgers, with his strong ties to new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, would be an obvious choice.
Another obvious choice would be the Las Vegas Raiders, where Rodgers would be reunited with star receiver Davante Adams. With Tom Brady’s retirement, these odds have shifted dramatically.
Jarrett Stidham, who replaced Carr at the end of the season, is +150, followed by Garoppolo at +200, Rodgers at +450, Levis at +1000, Jackson at +1200 and Baker Mayfield and Young at +1400.
In a fan Q&A on Twitter on Wednesday, Rodgers was asked “which neighborhood” would Rodgers be moving to. Adams’ reply?
The 49ers, who reached the NFC Championship Game behind seventh-round rookie Brock Purdy, also were a potential landing spot for Brady. With the seven-time champ’s retirement and Purdy suffering a major elbow injury in the title game, Rodgers could be an option.
Trey Lance, the third pick of the 2021 who completed less than 50 percent of his passes in two starts in 2022 before a fractured fibula ended his season, is the heavy favorite at -300. He’s followed by Rodgers at +250, Garoppolo at +700 and the retired Brady at +2200.
The sportsbook did not list odds for which quarterback would be the Week 1 starter for Green Bay.
At DraftKings earlier this week, the Packers were the betting favorite to be Rodgers’ team in 2023. Those odds were available as recently as Wednesday night but had been taken down on Thursday morning.
