Watch: Gary Returns Following Torn ACL
GREEN BAY, Wis. – On Nov. 6, Green Bay Packers star Rashan Gary’s career changed forever when he suffered a torn ACL at Detroit.
On Monday, nine months and one day after the injury and almost seven month after he took his first steps following surgery, Gary returned to action at Packers training camp.
“Like I was telling the guys, man, it’s a complete honor, it’s a privilege to be back on the field,” Gary said after practice. “My circle, my family, everybody knows what I’ve been putting into this. I told them that it means a lot. I’m just happy and excited to be back out there.”
Gary was on his way to a huge season last year. He had five sacks in the first four games and six sacks headed into Week 9 against Detroit. Everything came to a haut when he injured his knee with a simple change of direction.
Gary attacked his comeback like he’s attacked everything else in his life, from battling dyslexia and getting his degree to becoming a standout football player as a first-round pick in 2019.
“I’ve always been a hungry player, so it sparked a little bit more fuel up my ass,” he said. “I’m just excited to be back, like I said.”
Gary wouldn’t put a percentage on the strength of his knee other than to say it “feels good.” He looked as explosive as ever going through individual drills. (See the accompanying video.)
If his return to practice was an emotional moment, Gary wasn’t going to share.
“Just shows that my hard work, all the boxes that needed to be checked, I’ve been checking them and I’m still checking them right now,” he said. “Taking it day by day, but that just shows you my hard work.”
