Ranking the Five Panthers Most Likely to be Traded
This Carolina Panthers team could be missing a few key parts once Tuesday's trade deadline rolls through. Many around the league believe the Panthers will shop some of their most tradable assets not named Brian Burns in an attempt to recoup draft picks. And at 1-6, why not? Guys like Andy Dalton, Adam Thielen, Donte Jackson, and Hayden Hurst could be on the move.
But you could make the argument that Dalton and Thielen are worth keeping over a day three pick. Their veteran presence in those rooms have a lot of meaning and for Thielen in particular, his production is needed as he's been the only reliable source for Bryce Young to get the ball to. Over the next few hours, GM Scott Fitterer and head coach Frank Reich will be discussing all of the pros and cons to dealing some of these players.
"I had a brief conversation with Scott within the last 24 hours of just some phone calls that he was taking and I actually plan on sitting down with him this afternoon sometime to see if anything else has come up," Reich said Monday afternoon. "I've learned in these situations, trust the GM. He's leading that process. He'll do a great job. He'll pull me in when needed and we'll have some conversations later today to see if anything has come up in the last 24 hours that's worth talking about and sometimes it does and then sometimes, things fizzle out."
So with that said, which players are most likely to be traded? Here's what I'm thinking.
5. S Jeremy Chinn
If Chinn didn't suffer an injury recently, I'd have him much higher on this list. For whatever reason, he doesn't appear to fit in this defense. His usage rate had dropped dramatically from a year ago and is basically playing nickel on third downs. He's too good of a talent to be on the sideline. With his current status, some teams will not be as eager to get a deal done.
4. CB Donte Jackson
The Panthers don't want to trade Jackson, but if something comes along that they can't pass up on, they'll make a move. Quality corners are hard to come by in the NFL and with Jaycee Horn's injury history, it makes it difficult to move on from a veteran like Jackson.
3. RB Miles Sanders
Sanders has not played well at all this season and is already losing his role as RB1 to Chuba Hubbard. He had two carries last week and failed to register a single yard. The four-year deal looks big, but there's a potential out after year two. So if a contender or running back-needy team is looking to add a back at the deadline, Sanders isn't a bad option. It could just be a factor of playing behind a bad offensive line or perhaps just not being a fit in the offense.
2. WR Terrace Marshall Jr.
Marshall and his agent received permission from the organization to seek a trade and once that gets out there, it's hard to mend the relationships and feelings inside the current building you're in. TMJ has not come anywhere close to living up to expectations and it would seem like a good idea for the two sides to start fresh.
1. TE Hayden Hurst
This is without question the biggest disappointment in terms of the newcomers. It felt like Hurst was going to add a receiving element to the tight end position that the Panthers haven't had since Greg Olsen. A rookie's best friend is a tight end that can be a security blanket and Hayden Hurst for whatever reason just hasn't been that.
