'Stupid Sh**!' Patriots Ex Rips Bill Belichick Over Mac Jones
'Stupid' is not a word that comes to mind when thinking about New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick. Rather, "genius'' and "GOAT" are more commonly used. Yet, for some, Belichick has made his share of "stupid" decisions, especially recently.
Former Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel made his feelings known about Belichick when quote-tweeting a fan's mention about quarterback Mac Jones being due for a bounce-back year.
“Let’s go Mac! He can actually do good if Bill stop doing stupid sh** thinking he got Tom,” Samuel said in a tweet on Thursday.
An educated guess as to what "stupid sh**" Samuel is talking about would be the decision to make Matt Patricia and Joe Judge the de facto offensive play-callers, despite neither ever holding prior coordinating experience on the offensive side of the ball. That hiring decision ended up seeing the Patriots' offense and the once-promising Jones regress.
Samuel's assertion about Jones being able to play well seems right, as evidenced by his rookie season (2021), where he led the Patriots to the playoffs for the first time since the departure of legendary quarterback Tom Brady. Additionally, Jones's play earned him a spot in the Pro Bowl.
Jones threw for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions while completing 67.6 percent of his passes under then-coordinator Josh McDaniels as a rookie. When comparing his rookie numbers to last season's, you can see the difference an experienced coordinator can make. Jones threw for just 2,997 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, with a 65.2 completion rate as the Patriots missed out on the playoffs with an 8-9 record.
But he's not "Tom'' (as in "Brady''), as Samuel mentions. Still, like Patriots fans, Samuel hopes for the best with Jones and new coordinator Bill O'Brien as New England looks to make it back to the playoffs. ... with Belichick hopefully doing lots of "smart stuff.''
