FOXBORO — With the start of the new NFL year less than one month away, the New England Patriots continue to put the finishing touches on the staff of first-year head coach Jerod Mayo.

The Pats, per a Wednesday evening report by Football Scoop, are hiring Mike McCarthy as an offensive assistant coach.

In addition to sharing a name with the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, McCarthy arrives in Foxboro with close ties to the New England area. Since 2019, he has served under head coach James Perry as the offensive line at Brown University in Providence, RI.

New Patriots offenisve assistant Mike McCarthy spent five seasons as offenisve line coach at Brown University in Providence, RI.

In his first four seasons at Brown, McCarthy helped to revitalize and turn around the Bears offense into one of the most high-scoring and up-tempo offenses in the Ivy League. In 2021, he coached two-time Second Team All-Ivy selection Chad Broome-Webster, while crafting an offensive line which helped quarterback EJ Perry win the Bushnell Cup as the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year.

Despite being known for his prowess in coaching offense, McCarthy began his football journey by outside linebacker and long snapper at Widener University. Upon the conclusion of his playing days, he quickly transitioned into coaching, making numerous stops at both the professional and collegiate levels.

Starting as a scouting/video intern with the New York Jets in 2008, McCarthy would go on to positions with the Cleveland Browns (2015, offensive quality control), and the Detroit Lions (2016-17, quality control/assistant offensive line coach). As a college coach, he spent time at the College of New Jersey, Western Michigan, Tulane, North Carolina Central, and eventually Rutgers, where he assisted the offensive coordinator before taking the job at Brown.

Patriots Coach Jerod Mayo Motivated by Quest for ‘North Star’

McCarthy’s hiring adds yet another new face to the Patriots offensive coaching staff, as the team pivots toward an outside zone-based, west-coast style offense. Since officially taking the helm of the Patriots on Jan 17, Mayo has brought aboard offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, quarterback coach T.C. McCartney, offensive line coach Scott Peters, assistant offensive line coach Robert Kugler, assistant receivers coach Tiquan Underwood and running backs coach Taylor Embree
