Patriots Get TDs from Rhamondre, Boutte; Trail Packers at Halftime
The New England Patriots didn't exactly dominate the Green Bay Packers as they did in last Thursday's practice, but their first teamers on both sides of the ball flexed their muscles early and rookie receiver Kayshon Boutte starred late in the first half.
The Pats jumped to a 7-0 at Lambeau Field before the Packers rallied for 17-14 edge at halftime in the second preseason game for both teams. New England played its starters for three series.
Green Bay got a touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Love and an 8-yard run from Patrick Taylor to take a 14-7 lead. But the Pats tied it just before halftime on rookie sixth-round draft choice Boutte's 42-yard run-and-catch with a Bailey Zappe pass.
The Packers kicked a field goal with :01 remaining to take a 17-14 lead.
Josh Uche got the Pats off to a good start when he recovered an errant shotgun snap that sailed over the head of Love. Uche pounced on the ball at the Packers' 18-yard line, setting up New England's first offensive first-team snaps of the preseason.
After a false start on left tackle Trent Brown - stop us if you've heard that one before - on the first play, a couple of Mac Jones completions to Kendrick Bourne set up Rhamondre Stevenson's 1-yard scoringĀ plunge for a 7-0 lead.
On New England's next series, however, Jones overthrew an open DeVante Parker deep before rookie offensive lineman Sidy Sow was bulldozed on a rush to surrender a sack. Second-year lineman Andrew Stueber also allowed a sack of Jones, this one leading to a fumble and a turnover on the Pats' third drive.
Rookie first-round draft pick Christian Gonzalez was flagged a 23-yard pass interference when he failed to turn around and find the ball. Receiver Tre Nixon was injured on a diving catch attempt and will not return.
Newly signed running back Ezekiel ElliottĀ and rookie free-agent Malik Cunningham have yet to see action.
