Mayo’s 11? Patriots to Interview 2 Candidates for Offensive Coordinator
The New England Patriots are clearly leaving no stone unturned in their search for a new offensive coordinator.
In fact, they may actually be hoping their exhaustive quest may land them a “chip off the ‘ol block.”
The Pats, per a Monday report from Sports Illustrated, are planning to interview San Francisco 49ers pass game coordinator Klint Kubiak, as well as Scott Turner, who holds the same title with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Kubiak is the son for former Denver Broncos Super Bowl-winning coach Gary Kubiak. Conversely, Turner’s father, Norv, is also a former NFL head coach, and two-time Super Bowl champion as offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys.
Kubiak, 36, began his pro coaching career as an offensive assistant with the Broncos, a title he held for two seasons on his father’s staff. He next landed Minnesota as the Vikings’ quarterbacks coach in 2019 and 2020 before becoming the offensive coordinator in 2021. Kubiak returned to Denver for a second tour of duty as both quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator in 2022. The Colorado State alum joined the 49ers prior to the start of the 2023 season, working under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Turner, 41, is a near 20-year coaching veteran at the high school, collegiate and pro levels. His professional resume includes stops as an assistant coach for the Vikings, Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, as well as an offensive coordinator for the Washington Football Team / Commanders. Turner joined the Raiders as pass game coordinator under then head coach (and ex-Patriot) Josh McDaniels.
Patriots Pursuing ‘Best of Both Worlds’ in Offensive Coordinator Nick Caley?
With Kubiak and Turner, New England’s interview count for the position now stands at eleven, with eight reportedly still in contention:
Luke Getsy, former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator
Brian Fleury, San Francisco 49ers tight ends coach.
Nick Caley, Los Angeles Rams tight ends coach.
Jerrod Johnson, Houston Texans quarterback coach
Thomas Brown, Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator
Tanner Engstrand, Detroit Lions passing game coordinator
The Patriots also interviewed former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane Waldron — who has since accepted the same position with the Chicago Bears — and Cincinnati Bengals quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher, who was promoted as the team’s new offensive coordinator. Zac Robinson former Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator also interviewed with the Patriots before taking the coordinator job with the Atlanta Falcons.
