Jack Jones Gun Arrest: Should Patriots Sign New Playoff CB?
Though his teammates are apparently "livid" with his actions, New England Patriots' cornerback Jack Jones is expected to be in uniform when training camp starts July 26 in Foxboro.
Jones was arrested and charged with nine counts on June 16 for attempting to board a plane with two guns and a high-capacity feeder at Boston's Logan Airport. His next court appearance in the case isn't until Aug. 18, and with no "criminal intent" he could get off with some type of probation.
Or ... he could be looking at up to 30 years in prison and the Pats could be looking for another young, talented cornerback. But where would they get a player of Jones' talent and caliber on short notice? Free agency, of course.
One solution, offered by NBC Sports, is former New York Giants' cornerback Fabian Moreau. The 29-year-old started 11 games for the NFC playoff team last season, totaling 50 tackles and 10 pass breakups.
“Moreau played pretty well for the Giants last season and ranked fourth on the team in total tackles with 66,” NBC's Nick Goss writes. “It’s honestly a little surprising that Moreau remains unsigned. Someone who held his own as a starter for a playoff team deserves another opportunity.”
After making only $1 million last season in New York, Moreau wouldn't cost much for the Pats and their almost $15 million of salary cap space.
Says The Athletic of New England's suddenly tenuous secondary, "If Jones isn’t on the team in 2023, the Patriots’ depth at outside cornerback looks bleak - even after drafting Christian Gonzalez in the first round. The depth falls off pretty drastically and could cause the defense to play with three or four safeties on the field at the same time."
Moreau has played 90 games in the NFL for Washington, Atlanta and the Giants, with six interceptions in six seasons.
