Patriots Windfall: Most Salary-Cap Room in NFL?
The New England Patriots are currently projected to have $32.7 million in salary-cap space, according to estimations by OverTheCap.
But with a few moves, they could have around $20 million more to spend come free agency and add more pieces to a roster that underperformed in 2022. With a need at wide receiver, the Patriots may need to spend big to find an upgrade, which does not even mention the potential price Jakobi Meyers may command as part of an extension.
MassLive put together a four-step plan that the Patriots can follow to inflate their cap room.
Hunter Henry Signs an Extension
As stated by MassLive, according to OverTheCap, the Patriots could save a nice $10.5 million by cutting Hunter Henry. But knowing the history of the tight end position under Bill O'Brien, that doesn't seem realistic.
Luckily for New England, an extension for Henry could save up to $6.67 million.
Turn in Devin McCourty's Paperwork After June 1st
It is no secret that the Patriots' longtime starting safety McCourty is considering retirement. But if the 35-year-old does decide to call it quits on his career, New England should wait until after the June 1st deadline to file his paperwork.
If the Patriots do, so $6.2 million would be saved.
Restructuring Matthew Judon's Contract
As MassLive stated, the star edge rusher is worth every penny he gets from the Patriots. But in addition to recruiting other players, there is another way for him to help the front office... restructuring his contract.
Move around some money, and New England has another $4.92 million to spend.
Restructuring Davon Godchaux
Lastly, another contract restructuring; this time, Godchaux and the Patriots will add $2.46 million.
If the Patriots follow the plan above, that would add $20.25 million onto the $32.7 million they already freed up.
