Patriots Signing Cowboys Ex Ezekiel Elliott? One Obstacle

The New England Patriots liked what they saw from running back Ezekiel Elliott during his visit to Foxboro.

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott visited Gillette Stadium on Saturday but left without a deal from the New England Patriots. However, that doesn't mean Elliott had an unsuccessful day with the team.

According to a report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Patriots liked what they saw from Elliott during his time with the team.

“I talked to somebody with the team and they said the meeting went very well,” Fowler said. “He’s in good shape. They spent the day with him. He had dinner with some Patriots players. It's certainly a good option. I’m told there is some love for Zeke Elliott in the Patriots building."

The note about the dinner with QB Mac Jones was first reported by PatriotsCountry.com at SI.

However, Fowler reported that the holdup for why Elliott hasn't signed with a team has been that he has yet to receive the contract he is seeking.

"But it comes down to the contract, as these things usually do. The reason why Zeke hasn't signed is he wants a respectable contract based on all that he's accomplished in the league and what he feels he can still produce, That's been the holdup with a lot of these free agent running backs," Fowler said.

We have reported that before the Patriots get to the "money'' obstacle, however, there is the Dalvin Cook obstacle. Cook is the preferred "get.''

Fowler added that whether it is Elliott or not, New England intends to add a running back to pair with Rhamondre Stevenson out of the backfield.

"The Patriots do plan on signing a running back. That's been pretty clear. They've had several high-profile guys in the building. They've talked with Dalvin Cook's people about having him visit. Maybe it will eventually be Elliott," Fowler said.

Now Patriots fans will have to wait and see which remaining free agent running back the team brings in, as many big names, including Cook, Elliott, Leonard Fournette, and Kareem Hunt, remain available.
