Raiders Best Available on Day Two of the 2023 NFL Draft
The first night of the 2023 NFL Draft has come to a close, and after selecting edge rusher Tyree Wilson from Texas Tech in the first round (seventh overall), what can we expect from the Las Vegas Raiders on the second night of the draft?
Rounds 2 and 3 are set to begin tonight (Friday, April 28), at 4 p.m. PDT, and as of this morning, the Raiders are set to select three players on Day Two of the draft.
"It's the culmination of all the work that these guys have been putting in, all of us have been putting in for nearly a year now. Get some rest tonight, come back in bright and early, reassess where we are and the players who are available, confident in our work that we've put in, we're going to be able to add some more players that will have a chance to be quality Raiders in the future," Raiders Assistant General Manager Champ Kelly said on the excitement for the next two days of the draft.
The Raiders scouting department feels excited about the players still available in the next round. The Raiders will have the seventh pick in the second round, 38th overall, and two in the third round, the 70th and 100th.
Based on the needs of the teams selecting before the Raiders in the second round, the team has an opportunity to draft their quarterback of the future or continue to upgrade key positions.
Below are a few of the Best Available prospects the Raiders select on Day Two.
An apparent foot injury has dropped Will Levis out of the first round. Of the six teams selecting before the Raiders, three selected a quarterback in the first round, which leaves the door open for the Raiders to draft Levis and allow him to recover and develop into the future quarterback.
Hooker also waits for a team to draft him, as his age and injury time frame will set him back a bit further, but there’s no denying his athleticism, NFL-caliber arm, and IQ for a dual-threat quarterback.
"Good players, good college players. We've got to spend time with both of those young men. Good personalities, good character traits, both of them a little different paths and then some similarities in terms of them transfer into different schools and things like that. You've seen Hendon [Hooker] play in two different systems, Will [Levis] more in the Kentucky system, but two good players, two good football characters -- like them,” Raiders General Manager Dave Ziegler said.
Tackle Dawand Jones, Ohio State
Jones is 6-8, and 360 pounds, a mountain at right tackle who could solidify that position from day one. He allowed only four sacks in his four-year career and five pressures on 419 pass-blocking snaps last season.
He can take edge rushers out of the game and help move players back into the running game. Although he might not be athletic, his strength and great technique make up for it.
Tight End Luke Musgrave, Oregon State
Luke Musgrave is a tall lengthy tight end who plays a very physical football, and he is surprisingly athletic and talented as a pass catcher.
Musgrave also is coming off an injury that allowed him to play only two games last season. He showed everyone at the NFL Combine that no matter what he missed last season, he is still the best athlete at that position.
The Raiders could have their quarterback of the future in their hands or select players to win now.
