Monday was the deadline for the Las Vegas Raiders and running back Josh Jacobs to agree on a long-term contract extension, and the two sides did not.

They had until 4 p.m. EDT, but Jacobs is not expected to report to training camp with no deal done. Jacobs also never signed his franchise tag.

With these developments, Jacobs’ future with Las Vegas becomes even more uncertain. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Raiders offered Jacobs a deal, and he declined.

Another exciting anecdote about the situation between the Raiders and Jacobs came out. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero tweeted that Jacobs was sitting in a car in the parking lot of the Raiders’ facility with defensive end Maxx Crosby.

Jacobs was ready to sign the deal if it happened, but ultimately, nothing materialized.

From Crosby, however, this was a display of solidarity and sportsmanship. It truly encapsulates the kind of teammate and person that he is.

Jacobs and Crosby were a part of the same draft class in 2019, as Jacobs was the No. 24 overall pick and Crosby was the No. 106 overall pick. The two have endured ups and downs together in the first four seasons of their careers. Crosby has publicly expressed his support for Jacobs, calling him the “best RB on the planet.”

There are several potential reasons that Jacobs and the Raiders did not agree on a long-term extension. One of those reasons, as Schefter reported, was that the sides were not close on money.

Another reason is the current market for running backs. As several teams in the NFL have shifted to a pass-heavy philosophy, running backs are not used nearly as much anymore.

Jacobs was not the only tagged running back not to receive a long-term extension either, as Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants and Tony Pollard of the Dallas Cowboys also watched the deadline pass without new deals.

The Las Vegas Raiders open training camp for the entire team on July 25, 2023.

The Silver and Black open the preseason by hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT.
