What is a Successful Season for Tyree Wilson?
The Las Vegas Raiders selected Texas Tech edge rusher Tyree Wilson with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft in April.
Wilson posted 36 total tackles, 14 tackles for losses, seven sacks, and one forced fumble for the Red Raiders in 2022 en route to becoming a First-Team All-American.
This offseason, Wilson has been recovering from a foot injury he sustained at the end of last season. On Wednesday, he was finally activated off the non-football injury list.
With Wilson back ready to practice, his activity will ramp up ahead of the 2023 regular season.
This should have Raiders fans curious: What will Wilson’s role be for the Raiders’ defense this season, and how successful can he be as a rookie?
Looking at Wilson’s physical profile, he is an overwhelming presence. At 6-6, 275 pounds, Wilson comes into the league with the necessary frame to be an NFL pass rusher.
However, Wilson is still developing his pass rush arsenal, as he consistently won at the college level by being bigger and faster than his opponents. How he develops his pass rush moves will be a massive factor in how successful he will be as a rookie and beyond.
Thankfully, Wilson has a teammate who has one of the best success stories when it comes to developing pass rush moves, defensive end Maxx Crosby. Each year, Crosby has added something new to his game, and can help Wilson learn some of the things he has learned over the years. Having a guy with 112 career sacks in defensive end Chandler Jones doesn’t hurt, either.
Wilson was the second pass rusher selected in the draft. For context, edge rushers who have been selected in the top 10 in the last three drafts have been Travon Walker, Aidan Hutchinson, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Micah Parsons and Chase Young.
These players posted averages of 56 tackles, seven and a half sacks and 10 tackles for losses. While these numbers do not have to be the benchmark for Wilson, aiming within this ballpark would make for a considerably successful statistical season.
Realistically, a successful season for Wilson would be staying healthy and continuing to develop as a pass rusher. With all the resources available for him to do so, his chances of reaching his ceiling as a player are that much higher.
