Breaking Down Potential Rams' Playoff Opponents

Who could the Los Angeles Rams face in the opening round of the NFC playoffs?
In this story:

The Los Angeles Rams have already punched their ticket to the postseason after last week's 26-25 win over the New York Giants, and with one game left in the regular season, they will soon know who they will open against in the playoffs.

A lot is still up in the air with the NFC playoff picture, including the race for the NFC East between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. The Rams don't yet know who they will face when the playoffs open, but there are three possible opponents for fans to familiarize themselves with.

The Cowboys, Eagles and Detroit Lions are all potential matchups for L.A., and we'll take an overarching look at all three of them below. The Rams would travel to face all three of these teams, so we will also glance at their record at home during the 2023 season.

Dallas Cowboys

Current Record: 11-5

Record at Home: 8-0

Previous Meeting: 2023 -- Cowboys 43, Rams 20

The Cowboys are still gunning for an NFC East title, a crown they will claim should they knock off the Washington Commanders on Sunday or see another loss from the Philadelphia Eagles. After spending much of the season in the wild card portion of the NFC playoff picture, it is a real possibility that Dallas could claim the No. 2 seed in the conference this season and host multiple playoff games at AT&T Stadium, including a matchup with the Rams.

Also of note, the Cowboys appear to be a different team at AT&T Stadium, holding a 16-game winning streak in Arlington dating back to Week 2 of last season.

Philadelphia Eagles

Current Record: 11-5

Record at Home: 6-2

Previous Meeting: 2023 -- Eagles 23, Rams 14

Speaking of the NFC East title, the Eagles still have hopes for that as well entering Week 18, but they no longer control their own destiny in that regard after an upset loss to the Arizona Cardinals at home on Sunday. Philly looked like one of the best teams in the NFL in the early portions of the season, but they have fallen on difficult times as of late, dropping four of their last five games.

Detroit Lions

Current Record: 11-5

Record at Home: 5-2

Previous Meeting: 2021 -- Rams 28, Lions 19

If the season ended today, this would be the Rams' opening round meeting in the playoffs with the Lions holding the three seed and L.A. at No. 6. Detroit has already clinched the NFC North, its first division title in 30 years, and its first ever while part of the northern division.

It would be poetic, in a sense, for Matthew Stafford to open the postseason against his former team in Detroit, a franchise he was with from 2009-20 before being traded to Los Angeles.
