Rams X-Factor? Van Jefferson Can 'Answer The Call'
Outside of Cooper Kupp, the Los Angeles Rams have a glaring hole at the receiver position, and someone will need to step up beside him if the Rams' offense wants to improve from their league-worst 280.5 yards per game.
In a recent article by the 33rd Team, which examines the X-factor for every team, Rams receiver Van Jefferson was selected for his ability to play on the outside and his agility to execute routes effectively across different areas of the field.
"With the size to play outside and loose enough hips to smoothly execute underneath/intermediate breaks inside, Jefferson can answer that call. He needs to," The 33rd Team writes.
Last season, Jefferson's performance was hindered by two off-season knee surgeries, which delayed his season debut until Week 8. It took time for the receiver to regain his form, as he didn't record a reception until Week 11. As a result, he was only able to register 24 receptions for 369 yards and three touchdowns in the 11 games he played. However, despite these underwhelming statistics from last year, Jefferson has showcased his ability to handle an expanded role in the offense in the past.
One notable instance occurred during the Rams' Super Bowl season in 2021 when receiver Robert Woods suffered a mid-season ACL tear. Jefferson stepped up admirably and had a career-best season, accumulating 802 yards and six touchdowns.
Despite the Rams' selection of Puka Nacua in the fifth round of this year's draft, Jefferson will have numerous opportunities to contribute in 2023. As he enters the final year of his rookie contract, Jefferson will look to help Los Angeles regain their place in the postseason after their absence last season.
