Rams Cooper Kupp Among Best WR on ‘Accurate Passes’
It sounds simple, but if you throw an accurate pass in the direction of Los Angeles Rams' receiver Cooper Kupp, the former Offensive Player of the Year is probably going to catch it.
Pro Football Focus recently unveiled which receivers did the best -- according to their grading system -- in hauling in what they deemed to be accurate passes. Accurate passes are defined as "passes that have been completed 93.8 percent of the time over the last three years."
According to PFF, Kupp and Dallas Cowboys' receiver CeeDee Lamb both posted a 92.4 grade on accurate passes in 2022:
"Kupp almost feels like the forgotten man in the wide receiver discussion after injuries stalled his 2022 campaign. In all, 61 of his 95 targets were deemed accurate, though his 5.8-yard average depth of target was the third-lowest mark among wideouts who saw at least 50 accurate targets."
A right ankle injury limited Kupp to just nine games a season ago, so you wonder if the smaller sample size might have contributed to the shorter yard average depth of target he posted relative to some of his peers. It probably also didn't help that quarterback Matthew Stafford had an injury-riddled second season in Los Angeles and that the Rams never replaced Odell Beckham Jr. as the No. 2 target to alleviate some of the pressure on Kupp.
In any event, Kupp still hauled in 75 passes for 812 yards in nine games. With Sean McVay back for another season as coach in Los Angeles and a potentially healthy Stafford, there's no reason Kupp shouldn't perform even better in 2023.
For what it's worth, Jaylen Waddle of the Miami Dolphins, Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings, Garrett Wilson of the New York Jets, Jerry Jeudy of the Denver Broncos and Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Detroit Lions only narrowly edged out Kupp, all finishing at 93.0 or less.
