Rams NFL Draft Profile: ‘X’ Marks the Spot?

The Los Angeles Rams may find some help at wide receiver if they choose to draft Iowa State wideout Xavier Hutchinson.

While the Los Angeles Rams continue to seek roster improvements at several positions of need, they would undoubtedly like to add some firepower to their offense.

After taking a rather conservative approach to the initial wave of free agency, many have speculated that the Rams may be looking to the 2023 NFL Draft to infuse some vitality — along with an added weapon for quarterback Matthew Stafford —into their scoring unit.

One name on which Rams fans should keep a sharp eye is Iowa State wide receiver, Xavier Hutchinson.

The 6-3, 210-pound wideout was a three-time Big 12 All-American, 2022 AP All-American, and a Biletnikoff Award finalist (2022). He finished the 2022 season with 107 receptions, 1,171 yards, and six touchdowns.

Hutchinson will be among the most-watched prospects in the mid-rounds for good reason. The Cyclone standout is a versatile receiver with good size and the ability to get open in numerous ways. He possesses the strength to resist arm tackles and gain significant yards after the catch.

Still, there are some questions regarding his long speed. As such, he may be better suited to a move inside as a big slot option in offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur’s offense, perhaps as a complement to receiver Van Jefferson.

With Hutchinson currently projected as a third-round selection, his selection by the Rams is a distinct possibility. However, he is unlikely to bypass either top receiver Cooper Kupp or second option Allen Robinson — who is currently embroiled in trade talks. Still, he has the ability to provide Los Angeles with a reliable target in the middle of the field.

Should he perform as expected, Hutchinson may find himself fulfilling the needs of whichever receiver-needy team selects him — including the Rams.
