Rams Coach Sean McVay: WR Lance McCutcheon 'A Great Kid'

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay spoke highly of second-year receiver Lance McCutcheon after Saturday's preseason loss against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Los Angeles Rams receiver Lance McCutcheon is one of many young players fighting for a spot in the 53-man format.

McCutcheon played a limited number of snaps against the Chargers in Saturday's preseason opener but hauled in 2-of-6 targets for 28 yards. One of his receptions was challenged by the Chargers because they didn't believe he made the difficult, inches-away-from-the-ground grab—but the call was upheld.

Rams coach Sean McVay spoke highly of McCutcheon's "nice catch," but also explained how he's grown since joining the organization.

“(He’s a) really conscientious guy," McVay said. "I think he's just a great kid, really has a better understanding of some of the things that we're doing and really when you talk to (Wide Receivers Coach) Eric Yarber, (Pass Game Specialist) Jake Peetz, (Offensive Assistant) KJ Black, everybody likes this guy."

The 2022 undrafted free agent shined in last year's preseason, logging 15 receptions for 259 yards and two touchdowns in three games (two starts). However, he rarely saw the offensive side of the gridiron during the regular season, as he played just 10 percent of snaps in 10 games.

As the 24-year-old strives for playing time once again, McVay revealed McCutcheon has "aggressive hands," but believes he has a more admirable trait.

"I think it's just more about the work that he's put in," McVay said. "The confidence that has been earned as a result of that work in terms of understanding the big picture and sometimes at the receiver position, so much of it can be just boiled down to some (of his) opportunities."

McVay said that some of McCutcheon's opportunities, including Saturday night, don't have a "game plan at all." McVay explained that McCutcheon's ability to adapt and accept his role is also admirable.

"Sometimes the ball can come your way where you can feel like you're really a factor and then sometimes you don't get as many chances, but I've been pleased with Lance and he's always a joy to be around.”
