Rams Coach Mike LaFleur 'Excited' to Work With QB Matthew Stafford
When the Los Angeles Rams traded for quarterback Matthew Stafford it signaled that they wanted to win, and win now.
That was just what they did in Stafford's first season, too, as he led one of the NFL's best offenses to a Super Bowl victory. One year later, though, and Stafford and the Rams offense were a shell of themselves.
Now, though, the Rams hope that Stafford can get back to his Detroit and first-year in Los Angeles level of play, which new offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur had plenty of love for.
“Matthew, even in his time in Detroit, you’d be in awe at a lot of the stuff that he can accomplish on that field," LaFleur said. "Even when he was in Detroit, just knowing what his teammates and the coaches felt about that guy."
It isn't hard to see why LaFleur had plenty of praise for his new quarterback had thrown for over 3,000 yards every year from 2011-2021, with the exception of 2019 where he only appeared in 8 games and still threw for 2,499 yards.
LaFleur is aware of how special of a quarterback Stafford has been throughout his career and is ready to get to work with him this offseason.
"It’s going to be fun," LaFleur said. I know a lot of times, coaches can teach players a lot of things. But, in more instances, players can teach coaches a lot of things, too."
“So, I’m excited to get working with him, learn from him, and whatever I can provide for him, I’m going to do. And I can’t wait to start building that relationship with him.”
We've seen what a fully healthy Stafford can do for the Rams offense and just how good they can be. Even with LaFleur not handling play calling, which Sean McVay will oversee if he can help unlock that version of Stafford again then the hire will have been a success.
