Sean McVay Coaching Tree: Could Rams Top Assistant Move to Patriots?

Los Angeles Rams tight ends coach Nick Caley could be going back to his roots.

The coaching tree of Sean McVay could be growing even larger in the near future, as several Los Angeles Rams assistants have received interview requests over the past few days.

The latest assistant to join that club is tight ends coach Nick Caley, as ESPN reports that the New England Patriots, the team he used to coach for, have requested to interview him for their offensive coordinator opening.

Caley, 40, just finished his first season with the Rams. Under his guidance, tight end Tyler Higbee caught 47 passes for 495 yards and two touchdowns in the regular season, and earned himself a nice extension in the process. Rookie tight end Davis Allen also showed some flashes this season.

Before coming to L.A., Caley spent eight seasons as an assistant in New England. He got his start as an offensive assistant in 2015, but the Patriots promoted him to tight ends coach in 2017 and he would hold that title until the Rams hired him away. Caley also served as the team's fullbacks coach in 2020 and 2021.

Going even further back, Caley spent a decade coaching at the collegiate level. His most notable positions held at that level were an administrative assistant at Auburn in 2008 and a secondary coach at Florida Atlantic in 2014.

With a new coach in Jerod Mayo, the Patriots are hard at work assembling a new staff around him. As such, getting a longtime Patriots assistant who won two Super Bowls with the club in 2016 and 2018 could help ease Mayo into the role.

Raheem Morris To Complete Four Head Coach Interviews This Weekend

Other Rams assistants to interview for other roles this offseason include defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who has interviewed for several head coaching jobs, and quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson, who interviewed for offensive coordinator openings with the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears.

If McVay's coaching tree balloons this offseason, the Rams' coaching staff could look quite different next season.
