Tampa Bay Buccaneers Hire Rams-Ex Liam Coen as Offensive Coordinator
Another Sean McVay coaching tree member has found himself with a franchise this season.
Per a team announcement, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired ex Rams assistant Liam Coen as this new offensive coordinator.
Coen heads to Tampa to replace now-Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales, who proved instrumental to the development of quarterback Baker Mayfield this past season.
Under the guidance of Canales, Mayfield, the former Rams quarterback, had a career-year throwing for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 17 games as he led the Buccaneers to a 9-8 regular season record.
Mayfield even helped the Buccaneers win a playoff, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 32-9 in the Wild Card before falling to the Detroit Lions.
Now, with Mayfield set to be a free agent, Tampa will hope that the hiring of Coen will be enough to convince the former No. 1 overall pick to re-sign with the Buccaneers long-term.
Could Rams' Shula Be the Next Branch on the McVay Coaching Tree?
The Buccaneers now make Coen's third stint in the NFL coaching ranks, as he's spent time with the Rams on two different occasions, both ending with a move to Kentucky. First, Coen started in L.A. as the assistant receivers coach from 2018-19 before moving to quarterbacks the next season.
That is when he first left the Rams for Kentucky, who made him their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2021 season. Then Coen returned to Los Angeles in 2022 in the same position before spending last season with the Wildcats.
