Rams' Sean McVay Reveals Potential WR Plans For After Roster Cuts
The Los Angeles Rams are ending preseason action on Saturday against the Denver Broncos at Mile High. After that, some hard decisions will be in the laps of coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead.
Considering how poor the Rams' offense was last season - regardless of injuries or not - that side of the ball will obviously be a huge focus once Tuesday rolls around and LA has to cut its roster to 53 men.
The receiving corps is of particular interest, and McVay gave a slight peak at what could happen at that position based on the number of receivers he plans to keep and activate once the regular season starts.
"I don't know that I have an ideal (number)," he said. "A lot of times my mindset goes to what does the 48(-man roster) look like on game day, and there's different ways you can get to that. I would say that would probably be anywhere between five and six if I was gonna guess who I would anticipate being active on game day. Now what the active roster looks like, there could be a little more flexibility."
Of course, there are the obvious ones that will be on the team come Week 1.
Unless Cooper Kupp loses his all-world ability overnight, he'll continue to be the engine that makes this offense run this season. Ben Skowronek has turned into a solid and reliable weapon while Van Jefferson looks to put together a productive campaign after up-and-down play last season.
Tutu Atwell is likely set for an increased role in the offense, and Demarcus Robinson brings valuable, championship-winning experience headed into his eighth NFL season and first with the Rams.
That's five right there. It seems like an easy choice for fifth-round rookie Puka Nacua to be that sixth guy based on how he's impressed in camp and preseason.
These six have the look of a solid receiving corps heading into the season. But it's ultimately anyone's guess where McVay and Snead could lean when it comes to other guys like Tyler Johnson, Austin Trammell, Lance McCutcheon and others.
These guys will have to play well in Saturday's matchup against the Broncos in order to give the coaching staff one final and convincing look.
