'Drunken Sailor' Sean McVay? Rams Coach Too Low in PFT Rank
There are few coaches in the NFL who can rival the offensive genius of Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay. Under his leadership they have consistently fielded some of the most potent attacks in the league.
With plenty of success under his belt in Los Angeles, McVay is widely seen as one of the best coaches in the NFL. According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, though, he barely cracks the top 10 list - coming in at No. 7 overall.
"Now some of you may say that's too low, but I think it's just right," Florio said. "When you consider everything McVay has done and hasn't done. He's been to two Super Bowls, that's good. He's won one, that's very good."
"But, that drunken sailor all in, splash the pot, Teddy KGB spinning Oreos. They went all in and it worked. They won a Super Bowl with this 'F them picks mindset' that had them collecting veteran players and paying them a ton of money."
We have no idea why Florio didn’t just use the “F’m Them Picks” motto to explain here. (“That drunken sailor all in, splash the pot, Teddy KGB spinning Oreos.” … Huh?!)
Anyway … The Rams did indeed win a Super Bowl under McVay's guidance, hoisting the Lombardi Trophy following the 2022 season. And yes, aggressively adding veteran talent while foregoing future draft picks was a big reason why.
From Matthew Stafford at quarterback, acquired in a trade with the Detroit Lions prior to the 2022 season, to guys like receiver Odell Beckham Jr. who they signed during the season after he was released by the Cleveland Browns, the Rams made several splashy moves - however, flags fly forever and winning it all is undoubtedly worth it.
Florio, though, believes it should be mentioned that McVay’s Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl win are only part of the equation in his decision.
"Where are they now? Where are the Rams now?" Florio said.
The 2022 season was one of disappointment for the Rams. Going from the best team in the NFL to sputtering your way to a lowly 5-12 record is not good, no matter how you look at it.
Despite that, though, dropping McVay this low in the rankings feels reactionary. In his six seasons in Los Angeles the Rams have made the playoffs four times, won the division three times and brought home the Lombardi Trophy.
The Rams are looking to bounce back from their 5-12 showing, and having McVay will go a long way towards doing so. Even if they once again miss the playoffs, though - mostly as a result of “paying the piper” of the cap, not because McVay is somehow slipping - he has done enough in his time in Los Angeles to cement his place among the NFL's best.
