Rams 'Working Through' Determining Saturday's Starting QB
When the Los Angeles Rams take the field against the Seattle Seahawks Sept. 10, there's no question that Matthew Stafford will be the starting quarterback.
However, for the Rams' preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers Saturday, the question of who will take first-team repetitions has yet to be determined with Stafford sitting to limit injury risks.
Quarterbacks Brett Rypien and Stetson Bennett have been splitting the majority of second-team reps and both were listed on the Rams' first depth chart release as the first option if something were to happen to Stafford.
Head coach Sean McVay said Thursday "There's a lot of layers" in determining who works with the first-team offense Saturday.
"I think it's exactly who are we going to play?" McVay said. "We kind of have an idea, but we're going to finalize that, and I want to make sure I talk to our players about that first. Then, what are some of the things that we want to do? Those are the things that kind of go into it."
Rypien, a fourth-year quarterback out of Boise State, spent the past three seasons with the Denver Broncos. He started three of his eight career games, completing 61.5 percent of his 130 pass attempts for 778 yards, four touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Bennett is coming off back-to-back national championship seasons with Georgia, where he threw for 8,429 yards and 66 touchdowns in his 41-game career. Bennett was drafted in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
