Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback Stetson Bennett has been away from the team since September, and almost six months later, his situation is still shrouded in mystery.

A fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Bennett played the majority of the preseason but stepped away from the team soon after and was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list on Sept. 13. With the former Georgia Bulldog being away for so long, questions about his NFL future have been swirling for a while now.

Rams coach Sean McVay gave a short update on Bennett's status on Thursday, but didn't reveal much in the way of new information.

"Yeah, I think the first thing is you connect with him, which we'll do at the appropriate time," McVay told reporters. "You figure out all, where are you, and is this something that we feel like is best for him and for our football team to bring him back into this ecosystem? Those will be conversations that we will have. I think once we have a better idea of what we'll do with that, then that'll give clarity."

Bennett, who started his college career as a walk-on at Georgia before leading the team to back-to-back national championships, has always been a long shot to succeed at the NFL level, and it remains to be seen if/when he will return to the Rams.

Regardless of Bennett's status going forward, the Rams need to figure out their backup quarterback situation for next season. Bennett and practice squad quarterback Dresser Winn are both under contract for 2024, but neither is exactly an ideal No. 2 option. Carson Wentz, who the Rams signed during the season, is set to hit free agency once again this offseason.

In the same breath, McVay spoke about his concerns in finding a backup for Matthew Stafford.

'Really Like to Get Him Back!' McVay Hopeful to Sign Rams' Shelton

"Right now, we got Matthew Stafford and really in our minds, we don't have a backup quarterback that's on this roster," McVay said. "We'll see what that looks like in terms of how that affects Stetson and the draft or free agency. But I was really appreciative of all the good things that Carson Wentz brought to the table, especially post-bye. I thought he did a great job against the Niners and gave great looks to our defense week in and week out and I know all of our coaches and his teammates loved being around him."
