Rams John Johnson III Close to 'Getting Into Football Shape'
Late offseason moves, especially of the homecoming variety, are stories that get people excited for the upcoming season as the 53-man roster solidifies. However, that doesn’t guarantee the move pans out.
The Los Angeles Rams brought back former starting safety John Johnson III in early August. Despite playing in the team’s second preseason game, a 34-17 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, it would be ambitious to say he’s fully ready for the regular season.
“I think he’s doing really well, I think getting into football shape,” head coach Sean McVay said on Thursday. “He was in good physical shape, but when you’re actually putting the pads on, getting used to just playing the game as opposed to kind of working out in the weight room [a higher level of fitness is required].”
Johnson isn’t washed either. McVay pointed out the “bounce in his step” that keeps him viable in a league that’s more athletic than ever before.
In last week’s game, Johnson was credited with four tackles across 21 snaps. Per Pro Football Focus, he earned an encouraging 75.7 grade for the performance.
The Rams are yet to list him as a starter, placing him behind Russ Yeast on the depth chart. It’s a referendum on his status, but it shouldn’t sound any alarms. Even if he does not see a full-time role at any point this year, his impact can still be felt in limited doses on and off the field.
“He’s got position flex, he’s super smart, he has great concept recognition,” said McVay. “And I think you’re seeing that show up on tape.”
Johnson may not don the green dot he’s worn in years past, but Los Angeles is happy to have him back. It is only a matter of time before he is handed additional responsibilities.
The Rams will be sure to monitor his progress against the Denver Broncos in the team’s final preseason game on Saturday.
