Stetson Bennett, Rams Defense Struggle in First Half vs Broncos

The Los Angeles Rams may have some fine tuning to do before the regular season begins.
In this story:

The Los Angeles Rams made it clear that Saturday’s preseason contest at Mile High was about showcasing those fighting for a chance to make a roster—any roster—ahead of Tuesday’s cutdown day. Through one half, that lack of starting talent is overtly apparent. The Rams trail the Denver Broncos, 27-0.

Los Angeles has looked sloppy on both sides of the ball. Denver’s second-team offense, led by Jarrett Stidham, has generated over 200 passing yards. He was efficient early, completing all six of his pass attempts.

At the goal line, rookie defensive back Tre Tomlinson took matters into his own hands, viciously bringing down Broncos receiver Marvin Mims by the facemask. Unsurprisingly, Tomlinson was ejected.

Against the run, the Rams defense wasn’t much better. Poor tackling allowed Denver to rack up over 80 rushing yards in the first half. Even Stidham, who was shaken up after a shot to the chest, joined in on the festivities with a 20-yard run.

Explosive plays have defined Los Angeles’ defense, giving up gains of 50 and 49 through the air. Unfortunately, their offense hasn’t found much success, either.

Quarterback Stetson Bennet struggled mightily, completing four of nine attempts for a mere 14 yards. He threw two interceptions. On a third-and-14 dropback, Bennett was intercepted by defensive back Essang Bassey. Later, an ill-advised throw linebacker Drew Sanders’ arms. Bennett forced a fumble on the latter, though the Broncos recovered.

Bennett would be replaced by veteran Brett Rypien.

The Rams will look to leave Denver with some quality game film, but they may have to fast-forward to the second half to find it.
