WATCH: Lions Fans Boo Matthew Stafford in Detroit Return
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford’s homecoming was the story entering Sunday’s Wild Card contest with the Detroit Lions.
Stafford, the first pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, spent the first 12 years of his career with the Lions, giving them their only sparks of hope over a dry spell that has lasted multiple decades. He brought the Lions to the playoffs three times before being traded to the Rams for quarterback Jared Goff, who helped bring Detroit its first division title in 30 years.
Needless to say, Sunday is an emotional day for everyone involved, especially these two quarterbacks and the Detroit faithful who have rooted for them both.
However, the Lions fans didn’t give Stafford the warm welcome he deserved. He was booed as he came out of the tunnel, and they weren’t any kinder during the Rams’ first drive.
NBC’s cameras panned around Ford Field as Stafford took the field with his offense. A crowd full of Lions fans, some in Goff jerseys, others with Stafford’s – with his name blacked out – ruthlessly booed the passer they cherished for more than a decade.
Fair or not, the noise didn’t seem to bother Stafford much – his 12-play drive ended in a field goal and cut Detroit’s lead down to 7-3.

He’ll have the final three quarters to get back at Detroit for the unkind embrace.
