'Not a Mistake!' Falcons Owner Arthur Blank on Not Pursuing Ravens QB Lamar Jackson
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has proven to be one of the most electric players in the National Football League, but he may not be a fit with every franchise.
Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank spoke to the media following a disappointing regular season for his team, and he was asked if he believes it was a mistake not to pursue Jackson when he was made available for trade offers last offseason.
The Falcons have a quarterback problem (and are also seeking a new head coach), but Blank believes his team made the right call.
“I don’t think so,” Blank said. “He’s obviously an incredible player. We did not have the cap space. We felt we had an answer in [Desmond] Ridder, a younger player without that kind of contract that would have kept us from actually building the team we wanted to build.”
Jackson would have been a welcome sight in Atlanta this season as the Falcons pivoted back and forth between Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke at quarterback in a 7-10 campaign that did not lead to a postseason berth. Lamar, on the other hand, piloted his Ravens to a 13-4 record and the top seed in the AFC.

That top seed comes with a first-round bye, meaning that Baltimore will not participate in the NFL's Super Wild Card Weekend this week. Instead, they will have the same vantage point as the Falcons (albeit with a better mood): at home.
