Jadeveon Clowney Ravens Jersey Number Unusual
Jadeveon Clowney is earning immediate enshrinement into the Baltimore Ravens culture upon his signing with the purple and black. His jersey number bears the number of the franchise's active preseason winning streak.
That's likely far from the reason but the No. 24 will grace Clowney's first purple uniform after he inked a new contract with the team on Friday. The team released Clowney's numerical fashion statement on its social media accounts shortly after his arrival was made official.
Clowney's number will be familiar to Ravens fans beyond the exhibition victory count. It was previously worn by two serviceable arrivals from abroad, Brandon Carr and Marcus Peters. But it's a pair of new digits for Clowney's position group.
Officially listed as an outside linebacker, though he has often lined up at defensive end, Clowney is taking advantage of new number allowances in the NFL that allow that position to wear anything from 0-to-59 and 90-to-99. Clowney's ultimate reason for scooping up 24 may come down to basic, practical reasons.
Every number in the 90s is currently taken by other members on the Ravens' roster, as well as the No. 7 he wore in high school and college (Rashod Bateman). Clowney wore No. 90 in his first nine NFL seasons between Houston, Seattle, Tennessee, and Cleveland, but that belongs to fellow defender David Ojabo.
Time will tell when Clowney first dons his No. 24 uniform in a game situation. That debut likely won't come on Monday when Baltimore battles the Washington Commanders in a preseason DMV civil war at 8 p.m. ET, on ESPN.
