Former Ravens DC Mike Macdonald Misses Out on NFL Assistant Coach of the Year
In just two seasons, Mike Macdonald helped turn the Ravens' defense into one of the best in the league. He's performed so well that not only was he a candidate for NFL Assistant Coach of the Year, but he also earned interviews for open head coaching positions, and accepted the job in Seattle.
At the NFL Honors Awards presentation Thursday night, Macdonald was passed up for that Assistant Coach of the Year award by 66 points. The winner, Cleveland defensive boss Jim Schwartz, got 25 first-place votes to Macdonald's 11, leaving the former Raven in second place.
The scoring finished like this, per Rob Maaddi:
1st place: 5 points
2nd place: 3 points
3rd place: 1 point
Jim Schwartz 25-10-5 = 160
Mike MacDonald 11-11-6 = 94
Ben Johnson 6-10-5 = 65
Bobby Slowik 4-7-12 = 53
Todd Monken 3-8-7 = 46
Steve Spagnuolo 1-3-2 = 16
Raheem Morris 0-1-3 = 6
Dan Quinn 0-0-4 = 4
Brian Flores 0-0-3 = 3
Dave Canales 0-0-2 = 2
Steve Wilks 0-0-1 = 1

The loss is a curious one for Macdonald, as his Ravens defense led most major defensive statistical categories, and especially the ones that matter matter most in sacks, takeaways, and points.
The Browns were certainly no defensive slouches. Let's not forget Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett won Defensive Player of the Year and head coach Kevin Stefanski won Coach of the Year.
