Ravens WR Odell Beckham Jr. vs. Nike Lawsuit Continues Per Ruling
Ravens WR Odell Beckham Jr. was out of football for over a full calendar year after a knee injury in the Super Bowl in February of 2022. He then hit the jackpot with a one-year deal with Baltimore worth up to $18 million.
He may be hitting another jackpot soon, as a recent ruling will allow the Pro Bowl wideout's multi-million lawsuit against Nike to continue.
Beckham filed the suit against the shoe maker and apparel company last November accusing it of owing him at least $20 million in back salary and guaranteed royalties.
Beckham claims Nike intentionally suppressed shoe sales so it wouldn’t have to extend its contract with him. Last February, the company asked a judge to dismiss the suit, but a judge ruled last week that it will move forward.
Upon first filing the suit, Beckham declared, "Throughout our partnership, I have kept my promise and fulfilled my obligations to the brand. I am extremely disappointed that I’ve had to take these measures to ensure Nike fulfills their obligations and promises.”
Beckham added last week, “Today, I’m taking a stand not just for me, but to set a precedent for all athletes who have dedicated their life to the sport they love – especially those who don’t have the means to stand up for themselves. We are held responsible for fulfilling our obligations under our contracts, but we also have to hold powerful companies like Nike accountable for honoring their commitments too.”
The lawsuit alleged that “rather than continuing to pay the compensation and guaranteed royalties it is contractually obligated to pay Mr. Beckham, Nike is willfully withholding millions of dollars and inventing excuses not to pay him.”
Now that Beckham has a team and his lawsuit will move forward, it's time to focus once again on football. And the Baltimore Ravens.
