Tyler Huntley to Sign Tender; Ravens Content to go Forward Without Lamar Jackson?
The Baltimore Ravens are still in contract limbo with Lamar Jackson, but they now have some clarity regarding their quarterback room.
Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Pro Bowl quarterback Tyler Huntley is expected to sign his free agent tender on Monday. That gives Baltimore a starting quarterback for the season as the doubt over Jackson's future grows.
So this brings up an interesting thought.
Now that Huntley is expected to sign with the team, could that mean that the Ravens could be "ok" with the backup becoming the starter next season?
Clearly, the franchise wants Jackson, but the franchise can't wait around forever. Huntley went 2-2 in Lamar's absence in the regular season, throwing for 658 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. He was close to taking the lead over the Cincinnati Bengals during the playoffs until that unfortunate goal-line fumble.
So, there is a little cause for optimism that Baltimore will at least be competitive with Huntley under center.
Will the news of Huntley signing his tender influence Lamar's thoughts on his own tender? Likely not. But it gives the Ravens some assurance regarding the quarterback room heading into next season.
It could also make Baltimore "less aggressive" in signing Jackson to his long-term deal, despite his obvious talent. They have a competent quarterback who knows the offense, scheme, and players. There might not be an incentive to try and force through an agreement with Lamar as there would have been had Huntley not signed his tender (expected to on Monday).
With no ending in sight for Lamar and the Ravens' contract dispute, the franchise could be just fine going forward with Huntley next season.
